For outdoor enthusiasts and thrill-seekers visiting the French Riviera between May and September, finding a high-adrenaline challenge is usually top of the bucket list. If you have already done introductory water trails or if you are an active, sporty person looking for the absolute best combination of vertical rope work and deep-pool jumps, there is one legendary route that stands above all others in the Alpes-Maritimes: The Courmes Canyon.
Starting in the wild Vallon de Bès-Courmes and finishing directly in the famous Gorges du Loup, this full-day adventure is currently the ultimate must-do canyoning trip in the region for true adventurers.
Here is why this 5-hour journey with Les Geckos is the perfect upgrade for your summer holiday.
The Best of Both Worlds: Extreme Verticality & Aquatic Fun
What makes the Courmes Canyon completely unique is its two-part structure. It challenges your mind on the ropes before rewarding you with pure water park fun.
Part 1: The Vertical Challenge of Bès-Courmes
The adventure begins in a steep, wild, and beautifully boxed-in gorge right facing the cliffside village of Gourdon. This first section is highly vertical and technical:
- You will navigate through 6 consecutive waterfalls that you must rappel down using professional alpine rope techniques.
- The grand finale of this section is a jaw-dropping, 30-meter (100-foot) vertical rappel that drops you straight out of the cliff into the lower basin.
Part 2: The Aquatic Playground of Gorges du Loup
Immediately after the big rappel, you merge into the second section of the river inside the Gorges du Loup. This is where the action becomes purely aquatic:
- The highest density of jumps and natural slides on the French Riviera.
- You will swim through crystal-clear emerald pools and challenge your crew with clean, deep cliff jumps ranging from easy heights up to 9 meters (30 feet).
Safety First: Just like all our trips, while the technical rappels are managed step-by-step by your guide, the high cliff jumps in the second section are always optional. You can choose to push your limits or take the easy walking path around them.
Practical Information & Requirements
Because this is a full-day, 5-hour backcountry expedition including a relaxing riverside picnic break, it requires a higher level of fitness than our standard tours:
- Who is it for? Canyoning enthusiasts, sporty teenagers, and active adults looking for an intense physical thrill.
- Prerequisites: You must be at least 14 to 16 years old (depending on the water levels of the day), be in great physical shape, and be a confident swimmer who is totally comfortable putting their head under water.
- What to bring: A swimsuit, a towel, and a sturdy pair of closed sports shoes (sneakers/trainers) with good rubber soles to grip the slippery wet limestone. Note: cheap beach/water shoes are dangerous and strictly not recommended. You also need to pack a small picnic lunch (like a sandwich or energy bars) that fits into our waterproof container for the river break.

Forget about stressful travel logistics. Our dedicated canyoning base in Courmes (located between Grasse and Vence, only 45 minutes from Nice) handles everything for your comfort:
